The vehicles
The maxim in the construction of all vehicles was "low-poly", therefore a possible low count of polygons to ensure a good framerate of the computer. The illusion of detailing is generated rather with spatially appearance textures than with finely shaped 3D objects. So the locomotives shouldn't have more than around 10,000 polygons. The BR78 was allowed to reach approximately 13,000 polygons, because it has the coal "on board", therefore does not need a tender. Boiler cylinders details are illustrated, for example with transparent texture by a "slipped over".
For wagons a polygon number of about 5,000 was desirable. The dining car with more than 6,000 polygons should be the largest polygon number at a wagon. The idea behind the "low-poly" method is that the original MSTS is assumed as standart simulator. This way the AddOn will run fairly on an older Win XP computer with an older graphic card. Incidentally, vehicle modeller know that "low-poly" is not synonymous with "easy doing". The time you save on modeling a vehicle, you need to create textures with intended 3D effect. So for example it is a common practice to build a special model only to get a texture by making a snapshot of it. Three dimensional looking journal bearings can thus generate polygon-saving, for example.
This practice will be even more significant by "modelling" driver cab textures. MSTS needs 2D textures for the cabs. These often come from a 3D model which was built before.

Why are the interiors of the wagons that simple? Because the key 5 in "Usedom in den 1920ern" activates the left cab view of the locos, no wagon-interiors can be reached in the original MSTS. Therefore the design of the wagon-interiors wasn't made detailed. Only in the dining car, there is a detailed made interior model. One can reach this interior only by running the BIN patch or Open Rails. All other wagon-interior views are made by "sitting" in the outside models of the wagons. So at least a look is made possible through the window to the landscape from the respective wagon. The sophisticated function of the key 5 in Open Rails whee one can successively click through all the interiors of the wagons of the train, makes the low detailed interiors of the wagons of the AddOn obvious. Certainly there is room for improvement, an opportunity to update the AddOn.

Why the inscription on the dining car is wrong? We were not allowed by the current rights owner of the MITROPA brand to attach the original inscription "MITROPA" on the model of the dining car. Therefore, we have changed the inscription in "MIPTORA". We guess that someone of the repaint scene will create a texture with the original inscription :-) |
